Our Professional Leather Cleaning Process:

Professional leather cleaning in Olympia

At Grossbusters Carpet Cleaning, we specialize in protected (finished/pigmented) leather cleaning.

We clean:

  • Leather sofas & sectionals

  • Recliners & chairs

  • Vehicle interiors

  • Leather ottomans

We do not clean aniline or nubuck leather, as these materials are extremely sensitive and often cannot be safely restored once stained.

Step 1: Detailed Inspection

We thoroughly inspect the leather for:

  • Cracks

  • Cuts

  • Weakened finish

  • Worn or compromised areas

Areas where the protective coating has worn away are more vulnerable to damage and must be handled carefully.

Step 2: Dry Soil Removal

Before introducing any moisture or cleaning agents, we:

  • Vacuum all crevices and seams

  • Wipe down surfaces with a dry microfiber towel

This removes loose dust and grit that could otherwise scratch the leather during cleaning.

Step 3: Professional Leather Cleaning & Conditioning

We apply a specialized leather-safe cleaner and conditioning agent designed specifically for protected leather.

Our process:

  • Controlled product application

  • Gentle agitation using a tampico brush

  • Hand-cleaning of seams and detailed areas

  • Careful avoidance of weakened finish areas

This breaks down body oils, embedded soil, and everyday buildup.

Step 4: Hand Buffing

After cleaning, we:

  • Wipe down the leather with clean towels

  • Lightly buff the surface

  • Ensure an even, clean appearance

Leather is dry within minutes after cleaning.

Step 5: Final Inspection

We carefully re-inspect the entire piece to ensure:

  • Soil has been properly removed

  • No weakened areas have been stressed

  • The finish looks even and refreshed

Most average-sized pieces take 30–60 minutes, and all work is performed entirely by hand.

The 3 Types of Leather Used in Furniture:

1. Aniline Leather (Natural / Naked Leather)

Aniline leather has little to no protective coating. The natural grain, markings, and hide variations remain fully visible.

Because it lacks protection:

  • It easily absorbs body oils

  • It stains from food and drink spills

  • Liquids can permanently darken or damage it

  • It scratches very easily

Aniline leather is stunning — but extremely sensitive. It is best suited for low-traffic areas without pets or young children.

2. Nubuck Leather (Brushed / Suede-Like Leather)

Nubuck is actually aniline leather that has been gently sanded to create a soft, velvety texture.

It shares the same vulnerabilities as aniline leather:

  • Highly absorbent

  • Easily stained

  • Sensitive to moisture and chemicals

  • Prone to scratching

Because nubuck has no protective coating, it requires very delicate care and is not ideal for active households.

3. Protected Leather (Pigmented / Finished Leather)

Protected leather is the most durable and practical option for furniture.

It has a protective surface coating that:

  • Resists most food and beverage spills

  • Reduces absorption of body oils

  • Provides better color consistency

  • Offers improved durability

Most modern leather furniture is protected leather, and this is the type we professionally clean.

The Truth About Leather Durability...

Leather is often assumed to be the “toughest” furniture option. In reality:

  • It scratches easily

  • It fades over time

  • It absorbs body oils

  • Light-colored leather shows soil quickly

Manufacturers typically recommend professional cleaning every 12 months to maintain appearance and longevity.

Light-colored leather (cream, almond, white, etc.) especially needs regular maintenance. If soil is allowed to build up and embed into the grain, restoration becomes much more difficult, and sometimes impossible.

A Note About Pets

If pets frequently jump on your furniture, leather may not be the best choice. Even protected leather can be scratched by claws.

One quick jump can leave permanent marks.

Nylon or other, more durable fabrics might be a better choice for upholstered furniture in homes with dogs.

DIY Spot Cleaning Warning

Never use multipurpose cleaners, household degreasers, or generic upholstery spot removers on leather.

Leather can be permanently damaged by:

  • High-pH cleaners

  • Alcohol-based products

  • Excess moisture

  • Aggressive scrubbing

Check out our spot cleaning guide. When in doubt, call a professional.

Why Regular Leather Cleaning Matters

Routine professional cleaning helps:

  • Extend the life of your furniture

  • Prevent premature cracking

  • Reduce body oil buildup

  • Maintain color and appearance

  • Protect your investment

Leather furniture is expensive. Maintaining it properly costs far less than replacing it.
